- PURPOSE
The purpose of the document is to explain the process of requesting and establishing an NSF Research.gov account.

Step 1: Request an NSF Research.gov account in the Research Portal.
Anyone with a GSU Campus ID and password can access the Research Portal and request an account for Research.gov. Researchers can submit their own request or work with a grants and contracts officer (GCO) or other department support staff to submit the request of their behalf.
PI/GCO/or Other Department Administrator:
- Go to the Research Portal and log in using your GSU Campus ID and password.
- Select “My Submissions” from the left-hand menu.
- In the My Submissions page, select the “Create a Submission” button.
- In the “Create a New OSP Submission” pop-up, select "Research.gov (NSF) Registration” from the drop-down menu and select the “Create Submission” button.
- Provide the following information in the Research.gov (NSF) Registration form:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Email Address (provide GSU email address)
- Prior Affiliation (if an account already exists and the account holder is transitioning to a position at GSU)
- Existing NSF ID (if an account already exists)
- Role Requested
- College
- Department
- Department Contact
- Degree Type and Degree Year (for PI, Postdoc, and Trainee accounts only)

- Add the account holder to the workflow and submit the request by selecting the "Save & Submit" button.
- OSP administrators will complete steps to establish the research.gov account and approve the role requested then enter the NSF ID in the Comments section of the Research.gov (NSF) Registration request form when finished.
Step 2: Establishing a Research.gov Account
OSP Administrators
- Go to Research.gov.
- On the Research.gov homepage, locate and select on the "Sign In" button at the top right corner.
- On the Sign In page, select "Register".
- Select NSF Account Registration:
- The website redirects to a screen asking whether a new account needs to be created or have an account exists.
- If the requestor does not have an account, then select “Register for an NSF account.”
- Enter Profile Information:
- Complete the profile by entering the details provided on the Research.gov (NSF) Registration form.
- Follow the on-screen instructions carefully when entering this information.
Step 3: Approve role and access in Research.gov
OSP Administrators
- On the research.gov homepage, select the "Sign In" button at the top right of the page.
- Enter your NSF ID and password, then select "Sign In".
- Once logged in, navigate to the "User Management" tab under the "Manage Organizations" section.
- In the User Management dashboard, search for the requestor by name or email.
- Select the requestor’s profile in the approved users list and follow the prompts to make changes and establish their role.
- When finished, enter the NSF ID in the Comments section of the Research.gov (NSF) Registration request form. Though the system will automatically notify the user via email, the email does not include their NSF ID.
